Moving home is stressful, but although the number of people moving fell by 35 percent in 2022, people are still moving from one property to another. One of the biggest stressors for most people is the time it takes to pack up all their belongings before moving day. Unless you have virtually nothing, it’s going to take several weeks to really get on top of things.

But while it’s not too bad packing smaller items, if time consuming, you might be worried about how best to pack up your furniture.

Packing Up Your Home

While professional removal firms are not under any obligation to pack your stuff, most removal companies do offer packing services. (View our packing services here). It will save you money if you do your own packing, but if for whatever reason you can’t or don’t want to, a packing service eliminates a lot of the stress. The removal company comes a few days before the day when you move house, bringing all the supplies they need, and will pack up everything. Even your dirty dishes if you leave them in the sink!

Do Removal Companies Dismantle Furniture?

Smaller items of furniture, like bookcases and coffee tables, can be moved without much difficulty. They fit through doorways and are easily manoeuvrable downstairs. It tends to be the larger items that cause more problems, like huge bed frames and triple wardrobes.

Some homeowners are happy to get their screwdrivers out before they move, dismantling any larger pieces of furniture. If that sounds like you, then great. Just make sure you keep all the bits and bobs, store them in a sealed bag, and label them so you know exactly what the bag of screws is for. There’s nothing worse than moving into a new home and realising all the screws for your nice bed frame have gone AWOL.

If you are not comfortable taking a wardrobe apart, most removal companies offer to disassemble furniture for customers, as an additional service. Pay for this service and all your extra-large or awkward items of furniture can be dismantled and reassembled on the day. Bear in mind that removal boxes supplied by a removal company are for clothes, not furniture.

How to Handle Beds and Wardrobes

Beds are awkward items to move from a bedroom, downstairs, and into a removal van. Larger beds such as king-size beds, usually have to be dismantled, although divan bases do split and can be moved more easily.

Depending on the type of bed you have, ask your moving company if they offer a dismantle service. Most will dismantle beds for an additional charge. They’ll also place your mattress in a special protective cover, to keep it clean while it is taken outside and into the removal van.

Your removal company will also dismantle wardrobes and other larger pieces of furniture if you ask them before the big day.

Living Rooms

If you have a large piece of furniture in the living room, such as a big storage unit, then ask the removal company if they can take it apart for you. Removal companies dismantle flat-pack furniture far quicker than you because they are used to it. It will save you time and stress.

They’ll also remove the legs from dining tables and sofas, split dressers into two pieces, and more. This ensures each item can be removed from the property more easily.

The Garden

You might have larger items in the garden, such as a child’s playhouse. Ask the removal company if they can disassemble these for you.
